Why Store Ratings Lie to You

Why Store Ratings Lie to You

July 4, 2026 · Markus Voss

App store ratings are one of the least reliable signals in all of gaming. A game can sit at 4.7 stars and still be a shallow timewaster, because the rating often reflects how many pop-ups asked for five stars at the perfect moment, not how good the game is.

The useful part is the written reviews, specifically the three-star ones. People leaving a three-star review usually bother to explain what worked and what didn't. The glowing fives and furious ones tend to be noise.

Watch for repeated complaints across several reviews. One person moaning about difficulty is taste. Twenty people mentioning the same crash is a pattern worth believing. That's the kind of thing we try to flag in our own write-ups.

Ultimately, nothing beats playing a game yourself for twenty minutes. Ratings are a starting point, not a verdict. We treat them the same way, which is why every review here comes from actual hands-on time.
